Natural Finishes
Protecting Your Timber
Although exterior hardwood joinery can be left untreated, it is still susceptible to discolouration or ‘silvering’ as the natural oils which give the wood its elemental resilience slowly leave the timber. In the long run as the timber continues to dry out, cracks may begin to develop and it will succumb to bacterial/fungal rot, wood-decaying insects and damaging UV rays.
There are a multitude of treatment methods available from oils that maintain a natural finish to varnishes that add a glossy sheen to your new installation. Whatever the treatment chosen, it’s recommended that external wood is cleaned and retreated at least once annually to keep the wood supple preventing warping, cracking and to help the wood keep it’s natural colour for longer.
Oils
Oil treatments are perfect for maintaining the natural wooden finish and can actually enhance the granular ‘depth’ of the wood. Some oils add almost no colour or ‘tone’ of their own, useful for when a completely natural look is preferred. A coat of oil will provide an excellent water resistant barrier keeping moisture and mildew at bay whilst helping to retain natural wood oils and colour. Commonly used oils are Teak oil, Tung oil and Osmo wood finish oil, all of which are easily applied by rubbing into the wood with a cloth or applying with a paint brush.
Stains
Wood Stains are great if you want to enhance the colour of the timber while still retaining some of the woods natural appearance. Stains tend to create a surface barrier rather than penetrating as deeply as an oil, although it is worth noting that coloured oils are often labelled as stains. Because stains contain colouring additives, they offer further UV protection by blocking more of the suns rays. If you want to enrich or change the colour of your gates, a stain is a good way to go. Stains are applied with a brush much like any varnish, and should be reapplied yearly after rubbing back the timber.
Painted Finishes
Paints
If you’re looking to add impact with a classic or contemporary colour then a painted finish is the answer. Unlike oils and stains, a paint finish will create a tough shell on the surface of the timber to guard it against the elements. We can supply our gates in any colour paint finish to be sure to create a statement with the entrance to your home or garden.
