Our Select Gate Materials
Unlike exterior softwoods which take a lot of regular maintenance to keep from warping, cracking and rotting, hardwood gates are naturally resilient to the outdoor elements and require far less attention to keep them in shape for years to come. Whether driveway gates, garden gates, estate or other house gates, here we show you our preferred materials.
See our finishes page for advice on how to care for your exterior hardwood gates.

Iroko

Sapele

European Oak
Iroko
- Colour: Golden brown, will darken with age
- Grain: Coarse with an interlocking pattern
- Durability: Resistant to both rot and insect attack
Native to tropical Africa, Iroko is a very worthy option for use as a gate material. It closely resembles teak in both grain and colour but is more affordable than its pricey counterpart. Its hardy nature and resistance to rot have made it a very popular choice as an outdoor material.
Sapele
- Colour: Golden to dark reddish-brown, will darken with age
- Grain: Fine uniform, interlocked and sometimes wavy
- Durability: Excellent decay resistance, moderate insect/borer resistance
Being a close relative of Mahogany, Sapele is sought after for its even colour and durability. This African species is exported in large quantities due to its vast range of uses from cabinetry and flooring, to boatbuilding and even musical instruments. It bears well to the elements making it a top choice for wooden gates.
European Oak
- Colour: Light to medium brown, sometimes with high variation
- Grain: Straight, with a coarse, uneven texture
- Durability: Very good resistance to decay
With good availability across most of Europe and less-so in Asia and Africa, the European Oak (aka English Oak) is often used in boatbuilding. Its availability and proven reliability make it yet another great choice for an external gate.
